Obama economic plan aims for 2.5M new jobs by 2011

By WILL LESTER, Associated Press Writer Will Lester, Associated Press Writer
President-elect Barack Obama and his adviser Valerie Jarrett decide on lunch AP – President-elect Barack Obama and his adviser Valerie Jarrett decide on lunch during a stop at Manny's …

WASHINGTON – President-elect Barack Obama promoted an economic plan Saturday he said would create 2.5 million jobs by rebuilding roads and bridges and modernizing schools while developing alternative energy sources and more efficient cars.

"These aren't just steps to pull ourselves out of this immediate crisis. These are the long-term investments in our economic future that have been ignored for far too long," Obama said in the weekly Democratic radio address.

The goal is to get the plan quickly through Congress, with help from both parties, after Obama takes office Jan. 20. The plan, which envisions those new jobs by January 2011, is "big enough to meet the challenges we face," he said.

Obama noted the growing evidence the country is "facing an economic crisis of historic proportions" and said he was pleased Congress passed an extension of unemployment benefits this past week. But, he added, `We must do more to put people back to work and get our economy moving again."

Nonetheless, he said, "There are no quick or easy fixes to this crisis, which has been many years in the making, and it's likely to get worse before it gets better."

It will take support from Democrats and Republicans to pass the economic plan, Obama said. "I'll be welcome to ideas and suggestions from both sides of the aisle," he said. "But what is not negotiable is the need for immediate action."

People "are lying awake at night wondering if next week's paycheck will cover next month's bills," if their jobs will remain, if their retirement savings will disappear, he added.

The Labor Department reported that claims for unemployment benefits jumped last week to the highest level since July 1992, providing fresh evidence of the weakening job market.

"We'll put people back to work rebuilding our crumbling roads and bridges, modernizing schools that are failing our children, and building wind farms and solar panels," Obama said. He also made a commitment to fuel-efficient cars and alternative energy technologies "that can free us from our dependence on foreign oil and keep our economy competitive in the years ahead."

Obama pointed to the past, saying that Americans in this country's darkest hours have risen above their divisions to solve their problems, as a hope for the future.

"We have acted boldly, bravely, and above all, together," Obama said. "That is the chance our new beginning now offers us, and that is the challenge we must rise to in the days to come. It is time to act. As the next president of the United States, I will."

Oprah, Leno, Letterman: What's Sarah Palin To Do Next?

November 22nd, 2008 Post a comment

Sarah PalnANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - Sarah Palin is juggling offers to write books, appear in films and sit on dozens of interview couches at a rate astonishing for most Hollywood stars, let alone a first-term governor.

Oprah wants her. So do Letterman and Leno.

The failed Republican vice presidential candidate crunched state budget numbers this past week in her 17th-floor office as tumbling oil prices hit Alaska's revenues. Her staff, meanwhile, fielded television requests seeking the 44-year-old Palin for late-night banter and Sunday morning Washington policy.

Agents from the William Morris Agency and elsewhere, have come knocking. There even has been an offer to host a TV show.

"Tomorrow, Governor Palin could do an interview with any news media on the planet," said her spokesman, Bill McAllister. "Tomorrow, she could probably sign any one of a dozen book deals. She could start talking to people about a documentary or a movie on her life. That's the level we are at here."

"Barbara Walters called me. George Stephanopoulos called me," McAllister said. "I've had multiple conversations with producers for Oprah, Letterman, Leno and 'The Daily Show.'"

Asked whether Winfrey was pursuing Palin for a sit-down, Michelle McIntyre, a spokeswoman for Winfrey's Chicago-based Harpo Productions Inc., said she was "unable to confirm any future plans" for the show.

Palin may have emerged from the campaign politically wounded, with questions about her preparedness for higher office and reports of an expensive wardrobe. But she has returned to Alaska with an expanded, if unofficial, title — international celebrity.

John McCain plucked Palin out of relative obscurity in late August and put her on the national GOP ticket. Now, she has to decide how and where to spend her time, which could have implications for her political future and her bank account, with possible land mines of legal and ethical rules.

Palin is considering about 800 requests for appearances from December through 2009, with 75 percent coming from out of state. A year ago, just a sprinkle of requests came from beyond Alaska's borders. They range from invitations to speak at The Chief Executives' Club of Boston to attend a 5-year-old's birthday party, from a prayer breakfast in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to a business conference in Britain.

Michael Steele, the former Maryland lieutenant governor who wants to be the next chairman of the Republican National Committee, is seeking face time.

She has invitations to make appearances in 20 foreign countries, typically with all expenses paid, McAllister said. She has more than 200 requests for media interviews, again from around the globe.

"She has to pace herself," suggested veteran Hollywood publicist Howard Bragman. "She wants a career made in a Crock-Pot, not a microwave."

In her two months on the national stage, Palin energized the Republican base but turned off moderates and independents, according to some surveys. Flubbed answers in national television interviews raised questions about her competence. She was embarrassed by the disclosure the RNC spent at least $150,000 for designer clothing, accessories and beauty services for her and her family.

The right book or movie deal could help Palin reintroduce herself to the nation, on terms she could dictate.

While books and movie deals could be worth millions of dollars, it's not clear if Palin would be able to legally earn it. State rules say she cannot accept outside employment for compensation. But there appears to be little in the way of precedent left by former governors to judge if book deals or lucrative speaking appearances amount to "employment."

Palin has sent unmistakable signals she is open to running for president in 2012, but to advance her political ambitions she must stay in the public eye in the lower 48 states. As with any celebrity, there is the risk of overexposure. At the same time, she'll be under pressure to attend to governing her home state, which is thousands of miles from the rest of the nation.

"She has to deal with the perception that she bobbled her debut," said Claremont McKenna College political scientist John Pitney. "She needs to stay home for a while. If she wants a future in national politics, her No. 1 job is doing a good job as governor."

Just this past week, shortly after conducting a string of national TV interviews and skipping a state education conference, she was scolded by the Anchorage Daily News. "There are ... low graduation rates, plummeting North Slope oil prices, proposals to build alternative energy projects, the gas pipeline," the paper said in an editorial. "It's time for the governor to refocus on Alaska's needs."

Punk Musician Travis Barker Sues Over SC Plane Crash

November 22nd, 2008 9:20am EST
Post a comment

Travis BarkerLOS ANGELES (AP) - Punk musician Travis Barker on Friday sued companies linked to a plane that crashed in South Carolina, injuring him and killing two friends.

The former Blink-182 drummer sued the plane's owners, Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co., and an airplane maintenance company, seeking more than $25,000 in damages.

Barker's suit claims the companies improperly operated and maintained the Learjet that overshot a runway and burst into flames on Sept. 19 in South Carolina.

The crash killed two pilots, Barker's assistant, Chris Baker, and Barker's bodyguard, Charles Monroe Still Jr.

Barker is seeking damages for pain and suffering, disfigurement, loss of earnings, and medical and legal expenses. Still's mother, Thelma Martin Still, joined Barker in the lawsuit and is suing the companies for damages including grief and sorrow, funeral expenses and loss of earnings.

Barker and celebrity disc jockey DJ AM were both injured in the crash. The pair had performed together the night of the crash and were flying back to Los Angeles.

The lawsuit alleges that the Learjet was "defective" and faults the plane's pilots, claiming they were improperly trained and should have tried to take off rather than continue down the runway. The jet was owned by Global Exec Aviation, a Long Beach, Calif.-based charter company.

Along with Global Exec, others named in the lawsuit are Goodyear; Toronto-based Bombardier Inc., which the suit claims was responsible for maintaining the aircraft; and two charter firms that brokered the flight, Clay Lacy Aviation Inc. and Inter Travel and Services Inc.

In a statement, Goodyear spokesman Ed Markey said it was "unfortunate" the suit was filed before the National Transportation Safety Board's investigation was finalized.

"While the tires may have been involved, it is too early to speculate on a cause," said Markey. "The performance of the tire is dependent on how the tire was used,if it was properly maintained and whether it was damaged before the accident."

Messages left for Global Exec Aviation and Bombardier were not returned Friday.

Aviation authorities have said cockpit recordings indicated the jet's crew thought a tire had blown during takeoff. NTSB officials have said pieces of tire were recovered about 2,800 feet from where the plane started its takeoff down the 8,600-foot runway.

Video ~ Usher on MC Search "Serchlite TV": “It’s NOT a Game!”

Usher hit up MC Serch’s radio show and gave major props to Puff…ummm I mean Diddy for helping him back in the day. Ursh also credits Jermaine Dupri for helping him find his true “sound” and his Moms for keeping the money in order. Funny thing is…Usher mentions all these people but never utters his wife Tomeka’s name, even when Serch hit him up with the “older woman” question. He also seems to flinch a bit when asked about why he initially called off the wedding. I don’t think he saw that one coming…

Beyonce Towers Over Tokyo in New Ad

Beyonce looks red-hot as she shows off her cleavage in the arms of a Japanese pop star. The Sasha Fierce star, 27, looks stunning as she towers over Tokyo in a figure-hugging dress with a plunging neckline. But husband Jay-Z has nothing to worry about. The ad for handbag maker Samantha Thavasa is only-for-Japan and was made when she visited Tokyo late in October.

The lucky chap in the billboard campaign is Takuya Kimura, 35, singer for Japanese group SMAP. “Kimura is very handsome, strong, manly and sexy,” said Beyonce. Kimura returned the compliment sating: “I enjoyed the time with her. She is really sexy and crute. I can learn many things from her to be a nicer guy.” The ads will appear in Samantha Thavasa’s 117 shops nationwide as well as on billboards in Aoyama and Harajuku.

Madonna and Guy Ritchie Divorce Decree Granted
Friday, November 21st, 2008

A divorce decree for Madonna and Guy Ritchie divorce has been granted and may become final in six weeks and a day. Guy gets props for not taking Madonna to the cleaners.

Of Madonna’s $300 million fortune, Guy walks away with a paltry $10 million.

But he got what he wanted which was joint custody of his sons, David and Rocco, who he’s seen with attending a movie premiere in London last night.

The boys will split their time between London where daddy resides, and NYC with Madonna.

Lourdes is not part of the deal since she’s not his biological, so she stays in NY with mommy.

A British judge just a few hours ago, granted divorce decrees to 17 couples, including a “Ciccone M L v Ritchie G S.”

The decree said the divorce was granted on the basis of Guy’s “unreasonable behavior,” but did not elaborate. Rumors have it that Ritchie objected to Madonna adopted a Malawi girl. Source

Celebs Out & About

Friday, November 21st, 2008

By now you know that Jermaine Dupri couldn’t make it to Pure Atlanta last night because he was in Dubai with Janet Jackson for the Grand Opening of the world’s most expensive hotel, the $1.5 billion dollar Atlantis on the man-made Palm Jumeirah island. I know you’ve all seen pictures of it.

According to JustJared, more than 2000 celebrities from all over the world traveled to Dubai to indulge in the wasteful excess, including A-listers like Charlize Theron, Robert De Niro, Lindsay Lohan, Kylie Minogue, Lily Allen, Michael Jordan, Denzel Washington, Mary-Kate Olsen and even Oprah. B-listers Wesley Snipes and Chris Tucker were also there.

International singing star Kylie was paid a whopping $4 million to perform for one hour. The Grand Opening party for the ultra luxurious Palm Jumeirah man-made island cost more than $32 million and the party guests were worth billions in personal wealth. I’m sure security for the party was ridiculous.

Remy Ma Accuses Judge of Making Mistakes in Shooting Trial

Rapper Remy Ma wants to be out of jail by Christmas. So after exhausting all appeals while serving her 8-year prison sentence, she’s now accusing the judge who presided over her trial of making mistakes.

Remy, real name Reminisce Smith, 26, was sentenced in May on charges of assault with a deadly weapon, weapon possession and attempted coercion for shooting Makeda Barnes Joseph in the abdomen in July after accusing her of stealing money out of her purse.

Now, in new documents filed on behalf of the star, her lawyers claim the trial was riddled with mistakes by the judge. They pinpoint four key indications of the judge’s alleged faults, including the claim Smith was “unfairly prejudiced” by the inclusion of details relating to an August 2007 attack on a male alleged to be Barnes Joseph’s boyfriend, which Smith is said to have instigated.

Her attorneys have also accused the judge of “wrongly instructing the jury” over Barnes Joseph’s testimony, after the jurors were told that if they believed it to be “truthful and accurate”, it would satisfy the proof “beyond a reasonable doubt”.
Smith’s legal team want the sentence overturned and the star released before the seasonal holidays.

Smith is currently serving time at Bedford Hills Correctional Facility for Women in New York as she awaits the appeal. Source

Nicole Kidman Is Not Pregnant
22-Nov-2008
Written by: Jessica McCumber

The star openly dishes on an Australian radio show.

Yes, 41-year-old Nicole Kidman may be wanting to have more children, but she tells People.com that despite rumors to the contrary, she isn’t pregnant with baby #2.

The magazine reports that she set the record straight during a call in to Sydney’s 2Day F.M’s “Kyle and Jackie O Show.”

"No, I just have a little tummy," she said in response to all the “baby bump” speculation that came after Tuesday’s premiere of her new film, Australia.

She thought the whole thing was funny, playfully telling the station, "My god, I just had a baby four months ago – give me a break!"

Despite her well documented slim appearance, the actress says that she has what she calls “a little tummy.”

"I think I've always had a little tummy, though, it runs in the family. My sister does, my mum does, my grandmother did. . . . We affectionately refer to it as the 'little tummy.'"

On a much happier note for the actress, she absolutely can’t get enough of her newborn daughter, Sunday Rose, happily admitting, "I'm just completely besotted with her."

Kidman said, "She was singing up a storm this morning. . . . She's just discovered her voice. She's high and low. Other people may call it screaming – but not to me."

While talking, the actress also gave her thoughts on her Australia costar Hugh Jackman being named People’s Sexiest Man of the Year, calling it “fantastic.”

She said of Jackman, "He really is so nice and really, really genuinely is one of the easiest guys to be around, and he always manages to see what's good."

Chinese carmakers SAIC and Dongfeng have plans to acquire GM and Chrysler, China’s 21st Century Business Herald reports. LINK A National Enquirer the paper is not. It is one of China's leading business newspapers, with a daily readership over three million]. This newspaper cites a senior official of China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology– the state regulator of China’s auto industry– who dropped the hint that “the auto manufacturing giants in China, such as Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC) and Dongfeng Motor Corporation, have the capability and intention to buy some assets of the two crisis-plagued American automakers.” These hints are very often followed with quick action in the Middle Kingdom. The hints were dropped just a few days after the same Chinese government gave its auto makers the go-ahead to invest abroad. And why would they do that?

It seems that war drums are pounding again. The lame ducks just won't go down. "President Bush is to hold White House talks with the Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Monday after publication of a nuclear watchdog’s report this week showing that Iran may have stockpiled enough enriched uranium to make a nuclear bomb. ... Sean McCormack, the US State Department spokesman, said: “It’s concerning. This is a matter that will be taken up next week at the IAEA Board of Governors meeting.” Asked if Tehran now had sufficient material to build a bomb, he suggested that there were different opinions. “Some said it was enough; others said it was not enough, but close,” said Mr McCormack. “In any case, you don’t want Iran to get close.” ...The timing of the talks, between two lame duck leaders with only weeks to go before they leave office, is intriguing. During his visit to Washington, which begins on Sunday, Mr Olmert is expected to meet the Vice-President Dick Cheney, the Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, and Robert Gates, the Defence Secretary."

Global Forecast by American Intelligence Expects Al Qaeda’s Appeal to Falter - NYTimes

A new study of the global future by American intelligence agencies suggests that Al Qaeda could soon be on the decline, having alienated Muslim supporters with indiscriminate killing and inattention to the practical problems of poverty, unemployment and education. While not contradicting intelligence assessments suggesting that Al Qaeda remains a major threat with a strong presence in the tribal areas of Pakistan, the report says that the group “may decay sooner” than many experts have assumed because of severe weaknesses: “unachievable strategic objectives, inability to attract broad-based support and self-destructive actions.” The predicted decline of Al Qaeda is one of the few bright spots in the generally gloomy report, which describes a decline in the United States’ world dominance as China, India and other powers assert themselves.

Yikes!!! I'm a Slave to Socialized Medicine

Growing up in Florida in the 1940s, I saw many of the doctors my family knew fighting against Harry Truman's effort to enact what they called "Socialized Medicine." Their immediate target was Sen. Claude Pepper, a New Deal Democrat who supported universal health care. Our doctor friends dubbed him "Red Pepper" and helped defeat him in the elections of 1948. Yet, for all this early "fight for freedom," I now find myself in France enjoying single-payer, socialized medicine, which I would heartily recommend to all Americans. How good is the French medical care? Surveys by the World Health Organization rate the French System as the BEST in the World, and far better than average health care in the United States. Life expectancy and most other relevant rankings are also higher in France than in the United States.

White House Pushes Through a Flurry of Rule Changes Sought by Business

The Bush administration in the past week has adopted several hot-button regulatory changes long sought by business groups, drawing criticism from congressional Democrats. The changes include new rules that open the way for commercial development of oil shale on federal land, allow truckers to drive for longer periods, and add certain restrictions on employee time off under the Family and Medical Leave Act. NOTE: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ynews/20081121/pl_ynews/ynews_pl158 among other rules the Bush is pushing.

2025: the end of US dominance

The United States' leading intelligence organisation has warned that the world is entering an increasingly unstable and unpredictable period in which the advance of western-style democracy is no longer assured, and some states are in danger of being "taken over and run by criminal networks". The global trends review, produced by the National Intelligence Council (NIC) every four years, represents sobering reading in Barack Obama's intray as he prepares to take office in January. The country he inherits, the report warns, will no longer be able to "call the shots" alone, as its power over an increasingly multipolar world begins to wane.

A cadre of European politicians gathered Thursday at the Museum of the 18th century in Brussels to launch Europeana, a digital museum that allows visitors to explore classic paintings, photos, recordings and texts in the same manner in which it is possible to search, say, Amazon.com.

Trying to access Europeana on the day of its launch, though, was akin to navigating the Vatican Museums in the tourist-thick month of August. It was impossible to see anything, as the project’s three servers were totally overwhelmed.

Here’s a rumor that won’t go away - Facebook has been quietly searching for a partner to take over their year and a half old classified listings application, and may relaunch as early as the end of December.

According to our sources, Facebook distributed a request-for-proposal to a number of classified sites earlier this year (the same model they are using for Facebook Music).

The obvious partner is Oodle, which began powering Walmart Classifieds earlier this year. We’ve heard thin reports that they in fact have won the contract.

Whoever powers Facebook Classifieds (or Facebook Marketplace, as they call it) has a big hill to climb. Competing with Ebay (and their Kijiji) and Craigslist isn’t trivial. The original thought was that social networks were great for classifieds because you the buyers and sellers know each other. But Facebook’s current classifieds system shows anemic listings. The Silicon Valley network, for example, had a total of ten new listings added yesterday. San Francisco had twenty. New York City - zero. And for those who’ve forgotten, Microsoft launched their own classifieds site based on MSN friends and private networks (like businesses), and it went nowhere.

This guest post is written by Matt Rutherford, Web Strategist and technology producer for Charlie Rose. Matt focuses on the macro themes affecting the internet and the wider world.

In an intimate interview with Charlie Rose on PBS tonight, and available here, Stanford professor Larry Lessig reveals some profound views on copyright, remix culture, and the new hybrid economy that is emerging.

In particular, Lessig speaks out against the abolitionist movement growing against copyright:

My real fear is that the last 10 years have unleashed a kind of revolutionary attitude among the generation that will take over in 10 years. And it will be hard for them to distinguish between sensible copyright legislation and the kind that we’ve got right now. So my real fear is we’re going to lose control of this animal… I just want to reform [copyright] to make it make sense.

When Apple started running the anti-Vista commercial mocking Microsoft for spending $300 million on Vista’s own ad campaign instead of on fixing its problems, I called it hypocritical:

Apple’s advertising budget is also pretty massive. I mean, I see more Apple commercials on TV than ads for Barack Obama. Apple is on track to spend more than $3.5 billion on SG&A (selling, general, and administrative expenses) for its fiscal year that ended September 30. How much of that was spent on advertising? I don’t know, but 10 percent doesn’t seem unreasonable.

It turns out that I underestimated Apple’s advertising budget. Lindsay Blakely, a former Business 2.0 reporter who now blogs at Bnet, found the actual numbers in a subsequent SEC filing.

Tomorrow, YouTube will be showcasing its first live stream as it broadcasts its YouTube Live celebration, which will bring together a host of celebrities, musicians, and notable YouTubers for a massive event in San Francisco. The show will be streamed on YouTube beginning at 5 PM PST, and will include performances from Katy Perry, will.i.am, Joe Satriani, Tay Zonday (the Chocolate Rain guy), and a number of other musicians. I’m personally looking forward to a special appearance from the Mythbusters team.

YouTube hasn’t yet made any announcements regarding a livestreaming service for regular users (which would pit it directly against services like Ustream) but it won’t be surprising if we hear from them tomorrow about the company’s upcoming plans. We first heard about possible streaming functionality back in January, and later confirmed that it would be coming some time this year.

Every time I scroll through my list of ‘Friends’ on Facebook, I inevitably come to the same (somewhat depressing) conclusion: I have absolutely no idea who many of these people are. This is mostly my fault - my standards have always been pretty low when it comes to accepting inbound requests, and I never kept up with assigning them to appropriate Friends Lists. But there’s also the fact that Facebook doesn’t do much to automatically differentiate between friends and acquaintances (while it does filter your News Feed based on who it thinks you’re interested in, there isn’t a way to automatically generate a list of “good friends” versus everyone else).

Meezoog, an Israeli startup backed by veteran VC Yossi Vardi, is looking to help differentiate between acquaintances and close friends. Today the company has launched its own social network at Meezoog.com that attempts to determine how strong the connections are between users by analyzing their relationships on other sites across the web (it also asks you to manually input your relationship with each friend, but this isn’t required).

Plex 7 Adds iTunes and iPhoto Support and More

Mac OS X only: The latest version of the free Plex Media Center for Mac now includes iTunes and iPhoto support, iTunes visualizations, TV theme music, and the ability to play songs you've purchased from the iTunes Store. This tight iTunes/iPhoto integration comes in part from the Plex Media Server, which makes your songs and photos show up inside Plex while running in parallel. The Plex developer explains:
The Plex Media Server is a standalone program that runs alongside Plex (or alone on any machine, it’s a Universal Binary). It serves up media from your iLife applications (iTunes and iPhoto today, Aperture and Lightroom shortly). Plex communicates with the Plex Media Server on the local machine, on your local network, or even across the world over the Internet. This means that you can play your friends’ iTunes playlists or browse their podcasts or photo albums.

    Ne-Yo “She Want Me”

Producer: StarGate - FULL, CDQ *Tibs Fav.™

NEW Ne-Yo & StarGate! Don’t overhype it tho because while it is indeed a solid track, it is weaker than the other Ne-Yo/StarGate collabos. I’m not really feelin’ the intro 2 the track, but when the beat drops, it picks up. Definitely still a solid R&B track that I’ma keep in rotation and maybe it will grow on me even more. Down below a couple videos of Nas performing live and Common annoucing a NEW website. Enjoy!

Speculation was rampant the last few weeks that Google had to rely on a third party content delivery network to make the YouTube Live live concert stream properly at scale. Despite the fact that Google has it’s own quite impressive CDN, streaming live video (as opposed to progressive downloads, which YouTube has historically relied on) is hard stuff. And expensive - you have to license Adobe’s Flash Media Server, or a competitor like Wowza, and pay at least a couple of cents per gigabyte transferred on top of normal costs.

We’d heard rumors that Google had partnered with one of the big three live streaming services - Mogulus, Ustream or Justin.TV. And in fact Google has met with all of those startups to discuss partnerships or an outright acquisition.

But instead of working with them, or building their own streaming media CDN, they chose to work with Akamai. Google won’t confirm this, but it’s fairly trivial to detect (see screen shot below). Why did they go with Akamai instead of partnering? One key factor may be that Mogulus, Ustream and Justin.tv haven’t streamed live events with much more than 100,000 simultaneous viewers (correction: one person associated with Justin.tv emails to say they’ve hit “well over 400,000″), so tonight’s concert would have been an experiment in scalability for them.
